چکیده

As the Internet evolves into a universal network for all communication needs, it has to stand up to the high quality standards of traditional networks, such as the telephone network for voice communications. Multimedia applications are particularly sensitive to various impairments introduced by IP networks, such as packet loss, delay and delay jitter. In this paper, we study loss and delay measurements taken over the Internet and we provide a detailed characterization thereof. We focus on wide-area backbone networks, which constitute an important part of long-distance communication. Our study is based on a rich data set that provides valuable insights into the behavior of Internet backbones today, and in particular into how they affect multimedia traffic. We find that most of the problems observed seem more related to reliability, network protocols and router operation rather than to traffic load and traditional quality-of-service issues. Furthermore, the characterization and modeling of packet loss, delay and delay jitter can be used by the research community as input to various problems related to the design and evaluation of networkand application-layer mechanisms.

Assessment of VoIP quality over Internet Backbones

As the Internet evolves into a ubiquitous communication infrastructure and provides various services including telephony, it will be expected to stand up to the toll quality standards set by traditional telephone companies. Our objective in this paper is to assess to what extent today’s Internet is meeting this expectation. Our assessment is based on delay and loss measurements taken over wide-...

Internet Traffic Measurements over the Spanish R & D IP / ATM Network Backbone *

The increasing adoption of ATM technology in the main Internet backbones is introducing new factors of complexity in the network dimensioning, management, and operation fields. On the one hand, the behavior of the IP/ATM protocol stack is still not well understood. On the other hand, the aggregated traffic supported by high-speed Internet backbones responds to complex patterns which are highly ...

TCP Westwood Experiments over Large Bandwidth-Delay Product Networks

The Internet is evolving, and this evolution occurs at the physical, network and transport layers, promoted mainly by the advent of photonics networks. However, the nature of TCP Reno, the widely used transport layer protocol, leads to several drawbacks in photonics backbones with large bandwidth delay product (BDP) characteristic. TCP Reno suffers more from random losses whenever the BDP incre...

Fixed / Mobile Convergence : Aspects and Evolution of End-to-end Voice Performance in an Integrated Fixed and Mobile Network

IP-transport is a vehicle for integration of networks of different origins into a single entity. A new step in this evolution is the integration of fixed and mobile networks, not just at the service layer, but also at the infrastructure layer. Where such an integration for packet-based, non-real-time services looks evident, concerns exist about backward compatibility. In particular, the potenti...
